THE 2009 RAF AUTUMN ORIENTEERING FESTIVAL - RAF KINLOSS MON 28 SEP 09

I am delighted to announce that this year’s RAFO Autumn O Festival will be based up at Kinloss on Mon 28 Sep 09, and what a treat we have in store for you.  The available events include:

Sun 27 Sep - Local event in Anagach Forest, Grantown
Sun 27 Sep - Dyke 10K Race, 15 min from Kinloss
Mon 28 Sep - Harris Score, Roseisle Forest
Mon 28 Sep - Team Relay, RAF Kinloss Station Map

Transport will be laid on for those without their own transport. Full details will be published closer to September, with some background included in the article below.

To get you in the mood, there is a top-quality local event at Anagach Forest, Grantown-on-Spey on Sun 27 Sep. A minibus will be laid on from Kinloss for those without their own transport, quite possibly stopping for refreshment on the return trip. For anyone who doesn’t feel like doing 3 orienteering events in 2 days, but still wants to go for a run, there’s the Dyke 10K race, a popular event organised by Forres Harriers in the pretty village of Dyke, just 15 minutes journey from Kinloss. This race starts at 2.30 pm.

The festival itself is a double-header. The morning’s event is a Harris Score in Roseisle Forest, one of Scotland’s best-loved orienteering areas, with wonderfully-runnable forested sand dune terrain. In a Harris score event, teams of 3 have to collect 30 controls between them in as fast a time as possible. 24 of the controls can be split between team members, but there are 6 that have to be visited by every team member. There are draconian time penalties for any missed controls or controls that are visited inadvertently by more than one team member. To do well requires good planning, good navigation and quick thinking! The afternoon will be a team relay on the orienteering map of RAF Kinloss. This map has been used for 2 events on Stn in 2008, and promises some fast and exciting head-to-head running with one or two little gotchas to look out for.

The Kinloss organising team of Chris Spencer, Roo Hornby, Ian Welsh, Paul Stitson, Ian Howells and hopefully Ben Livesey, ably supported by the PEd Flt, and co-ordinated by me, have already started work on putting the event together. It will hopefully feature in the Kinloss CO’s Cup with a good number of Stn teams to add to the atmosphere. Can you afford to miss it? Absolutely not! Get your flights booked now while they’re cheap and book your accommodation!

Full details and an entry form will be circulated to stns and on the RAFO websute a bit nearer the time, but start putting your teams together now and look forward to the RAFO event of 2009!
