EEOL EVENT RESULTS - WAKERLEY GREAT WOOD - 8 MAY 02

RAF Brampton/Wyton/Henlow hosted an orienteering event for the EEOL on Wednesday 8 May 02 at Wakerley Great Wood. Technically, under BOF guidelines the A Course is void. However, due to the many issues expressed and involved with the league, we have forwarded the results (disregarding the punching of checkpoints 5 and 16) to the league officials for consideration.Interim results for the event follow the event officials comments.

CONTROLLER'S COMMENTS

Oops, Sorry !

ORGANISER'S COMMENTS

This was the first event that I have organised, and it turned out to be very enjoyable - I recommend it to anyone who wants to get a little bit more involved in their sport!

Wakerley is a good location - apart from being very picturesque just at this time of the year (did you have time to notice the bluebells and primroses), it offers a range of terrain, and even managed to stay quite wet under foot in places, despite the recent dry spell!

Having check run it myself without being involved in the planning, I felt that the A course was an excellent course, with good use of the layout of the woods and a good degree of technicality. Obviously it was a great shame that controls A5 and A16 were misplaced - I ended up doing a lot of apologising on the day, which I'm only too happy to repeat - Sorry! It just goes to show, you can check, check and check again, bit there's always something that can c**k you up!

PLANNER'S COMMENTS

The B course is always challenging to plan as it needs to accommodate both the novice runners (without frightening them away from the sport) and to challenge the more experienced Orienteer who does not want to cover the longer A course distance. The winning time of 47 minutes was about right for the B course and I didn't hear any unhappy campers at the end of it so I'll mark that one down as a success.

The A course, what can I say? I had intended the course to be a challenge, but having the No.5 and 16 flags about 100 metres from their marked locations is a tad on the excessive side, OOPS!! Despite this, I noticed most competitors took it in the right spirit and decided to have a go at the rest of the course instead of kicking it into touch. Wakerley has an extensive path network, the use of a second master map and figure of eight circuit was intended to dissuade everyone from the track running scenario so common in our local forests, and give a more challenging combination of multiple route choice, varying terrain and greater distances from attack points. Judging from the comments at the finish I think the course achieved this, and the winning time would have been nearer 70 minutes if competitors hadn't experienced panic, fustration, confusion, anger, heart palpitations, etc. a third of the way into the course. Sorry.

Could the chap from 3 AAC who had an early shower come forward as we wish to enter you in the East Anglian World Bog Snorkelling Championships ;-)
