| Inter Service Orienteering Championships 2001 |
The Inter Service Championships 2001 were held on 4th Nov 2001 at Denny Lodge in the New Forest. The Event was organised by Southampton Orienteering Club for their annual November Classic chase. The men competed on the M21 Badge course over a distance of 13.5km and 150m of climb, whilst the ladies competed on the W21 course over 9.4km and 110m of climb. Again, the Army proving their superiority at Orienteering by comprehensively beating us into 2nd place in both the men and ladies events.
The day belonged to Nicky MacAulay who produce an excellent run and finished second in the ladies event.
Photos of the event are available in the Photo Gallery
The event report from Pete Wood is shown below:
The 2001 Inter-Services race took place in the New Forest on Sunday 4th Nov. The RAF teams took a bit of a pounding from the Army, who were just too good for any RAF team we could select.
We must, however, applaud the run of the day. Nicky MacCaulay had the run of her life and completed her W21L course in 73mins 42secs, to post the second fastest time in the Inter-Services competition for the Ladies. Nicky was the only non-Army trophy winner on the day and received the biggest ovation I have witnessed in 10 years of this competition. Well done Nicky, we hope you can return next year to run in the Combined-Services team.
From this competition though we must take heart from the fact that in the Men's team the RAF fielded a relatively young team. Bond, Ellis, Kinnear and co brought a youthful feel to the Team, which inspired the Old and Bold to get a move on. The RAFO formation drinking team ably led by Marshall Kinnear the evening before certainly would have impressed Mr John Newton. "Red wine is good for you" I once heard a heart specialist tell my Father-in-law, but not in such quantities the evening before such an important race! I have been instructed by the Chairman to inform all RAFO runners that this trait of enjoying oneself the night before the Inter-Services is to cease forthwith . . . . ..
RAF times are listed below. Remember that the first 4 Ladies and the first 7 Gents qualified for their RAF colours. Well done if that applies to you.
We will enjoy ourselves again next year. That is an order from your team manager of the day.
Kev Duell actually ran as a last minute reserve, he had the misfortune to ring me during the week preceding the event asking me for travel authority to the National Event a couple of weeks before. Mentioning that he had actually orienteered since the FAM epidemic naturally made him the ideal choice. Isn't hindsight a wonderful thing! If only he had been in the Team he would have gained his RAF Colours. There is always another year Kev.
Pete Wood. Nice bloke. shame about his table manners
