The Inter Command and Individual Championships 2001 were held on the 22nd Oct 2000 at
Wrekins Bury Ditches Badge Event. The events were contested on the M21 and W21 courses, both of which proved to be
a very technical and physical challenge.
Comments from the officials on the day and the results are shown below:
- Organisers Report
We were glad the RAF favoured our venue with
their Team and Individual Championships, as numbers were somewhat down due to
the unfortunate re-scheduling of the Caddihoe Chase because of the petrol
problems. We were lucky to have lovely weather and a member with an Austin
Gypsy to cope with the mud from previous downpours. First stuck was the
organiser, second the sparkling new St. John Ambulance. If we paid our
planners and controllers by the hour, fees would soar in excess of £20, so I'm
extremely grateful to Adrian for his thought provoking courses and to Robert
Vickers for his unstinting advice and help. You may come across Adrian again
in his new job as Warden of Malham Tarn Visitor Centre. I hope it won't be
long before he is planning courses there. The 'Wrekin machine' certainly does
take the load off the organiser once the day begins and I know the RAF were
particularly pleased with the speedy display of results, enabling an early
presentation of awards.

- Planner's Report
Thank you all for coming. If it was a return
visit, then double thanks. You may not believe me, but it is a beautiful wood,
the only problem is the undergrowth. The map is good. I aimed to maximise good
running, rewarding good route choice and careful, fine navigation; sound
principles for any planner. There are inevitable compromises. All courses had
a lot of climbing. Shorter courses used the runnable white in Colstey Wood
with an uphill first few controls then descending to the finish. Medium
courses were planned so they didn't cross the north/ south valley. This led to
compromise on length, but kept them in a runnable section of Colstey Wood. The
longest courses had, inevitably, to visit the wilder extremes of the area, but
gained from some good route choices on their way back to the downhill run
through Colstey. Thanks to: Mike Callow, Rod Postlethwaite and the Wrekin
machine. Robert Vickers for controlling patiently. Mike Capper for help with
ideas, taping and wise advice. My wife for holding the fort whilst I was out
planning.
Adrian Pickles(WYE)
- Controller's Report
Bury Ditches is not the easiest of areas for
the Planner to practice his art, so I should like to thank Adrian on your
behalf for producing a fine range of courses. We did warn you about the
brambles, and to be honest the undergrowth is always going to be a problem
here. However, we agreed at an early stage that maximum use should be made of
the better parts of Colstey Wood, so that only the longer courses ventured
into the roughest areas. Again, we both thought you would like to have the car
park, start and finish all close together, even though the price was quite a
lot of climb on the courses, especially since this resulted in some quite
onerous early legs for the senior age classes. However, I am generally pleased
with the outcome from an orienteering point of view. I am only sorry that the
counter attraction of the re-arranged Caddihoe Chase reduced the attendance,
which must be quite a disappointment for the Wrekin Club. This event deserved
to be enjoyed by more people. In a few cases where different age groups ran
the same course, and the leading competitors in the younger class achieved
slower times, I have adjusted the badge standard qualifying times of the more
senior class (increased, to their benefit)
