| Combined Command Championships 2002 |
The RAF Combined Commands Championships were held on the 26th Sep 2002 at Irchester Country Park near Northampton. The event was organised by PTC this year. Both men's courses were over 6.1km's of physical and fairly technical terrain, whilst the ladies event was 4km and of simular difficulty.

ORGANISER'S REPORT
Irchester Country Park was chosen primarily for its central location and ease of access in the hope of encouraging as many participants as possible.
Additionally, the area had not been used much for orienteering and although small, was deemed to be sufficiently physically and technically challenging and ideally suited to the use of
SportIdent. The relatively low turnout was disappointing, although not unexpected due to the current operational tempo and other commitments such as CT and Op Fresco.
As ever, I am deeply indebted to the many volunteers who gave assistance on the day, particularly the RAF Brampton/Wyton/Henlow personnel, led by Paul Wright, who manned the registration/results, carpark, start and finish all day.
Finally, thanks go to Northants Countryside Services, especially Mike Anderson, the Irchester Country Park Officer, for allowing us to use the area and for their close co-operation throughout the whole planning process.
PLANNER'S REPORT
This was the first time I had planned the courses for a championship event, and also my first use of SportIdent in anger, which had me doubly twitching on the competition morning.
I think the event went quite well, with only one control box giving up during the event, and we have managed to recover and reinstate the split times for that control.
The courses were designed to be short, physical and technical, and I think they achieved their aim;
with most people saying they enjoyed the courses and winning times around the par time of 60 minutes.
CONTROLLER'S REPORT
Over the last 12 years I have been involved in organising many orienteering events around the UK, and decided that we needed a new location to hold this years Championships.
An approach to LEI orienteering club last year, provided us with the venue for this years Command Champs:
Irchester. Marc Roberts and myself had organised a league event at Irchester in Nov 01: so we were well aware of its special features: earthwalls - enormous or smaller!
As the first orienteering competition of the season, it was important to design courses which were both challenging and encouraging, as we needed to select orienteers for the RAF Championships and encourage new runners to orienteering.
I believe we achieved both goals. Despite the shortness of the courses, but taking into consideration the climb, we planned the A1/A2 courses with a winning time of 60 minutes and an average finishing time of 75 minutes, and the B course, a winning time of 45 minutes and average time of 60 minutes.
Obviously, the earthwalls got the better of most orienteers and the times were slower.
Marc Roberts did an excellent job planning the courses and managing the SportIdent system, and despite the best efforts of Tony Green in advising everyone about the event, numbers were down considerably on past years.
I appreciate that some of the controls were in none featureless locations, but that was the challenging part of the course!
