| RAF Inter Station Champs 2004 |
The RAF Inter Station Championships were held on the 26th Feb 2004 at Twywell Hillls and Dales near Kettering. The event was organized by RAF Brampton as they were the reigning inter station champions. The men competed over 6.3km, whilst the ladies event was over 4.2km. A novice competition for those with less than 12 months orienteering experience was held over the same courses.
Congratulations to Marham for winning the ladies' event by a tight margin of only 2 minutes ahead of Digby. Also, congratulations to the Cosford team who comfortably won the men's event, it looks like we'll be off to Cannock Chase for next years event.
Planners comments are shown below with Controllers and Organizers view to follow soon.
Twywell Hills & Dales was chosen for its ease of access and suitability
for an event that would meet the needs of novices whilst presenting a
challenge and some interest to our more experienced competitors. As you
have now seen, there was a good mixture of easier areas with more complex
contour detail in others and no chance of getting lost so long as you
could hear the A14.
With the area being so compact it meant that the courses could not be
long, however the undulating nature and the complexity in places served to
'slow' the runners. The large number of controls (for such comparatively
short courses) was dictated by the need to try and direct competitors to
the gates rather than have them jumping fences. This worked for most
although it was interesting to see 'A' course runners on the knoll near
the finsh totally ignore the nearest gate 15m away and head off 100m
towards the gate next to the start (there's no accounting for route
choice!)
The courses were planned to achieve winning times of around 50 minutes and
thanks to beginners luck that worked out nicely. The decison to use two
maps per course was taken early on to avoid any confusion and clutter on
one map and that appears to have been appreciated by many on the day.
Finally I hope you all enjoyed your run on the day.
My thanks to Bob and Marc for their invaluable advice and if you've never
tried planning, give it a go. If nothing else it will certainly make you
think about control placement and you'll definitely get to know your
chosen area very well.
